About Our Trademarked University Logos

The Mason logo is the foundation of our visual identity and must be used on all internal and external communications. The elements of the logo have been carefully considered and cannot be re-created or reconfigured.

The University’s logo is the primary graphic element used to identify the University and all of its activities, programs, services, and affiliates.

When including the University’s logo in a project:

  • Use prominently on the front, top left, or lower right of all publications and media
  • Size the logo sufficiently so that it can easily be seen and recognized
  • Leave space between the logo and other elements
  • Do not recreate, reconfigure, or use elements of the logo to create new logos
  • Download the University logo

The Mason logos with unit names, also known as unit logos, are used to identify schools, colleges, administrative offices, and programs.

When including a unit logo in a project, remember that:

  • Unit logos may be used on the back, on the mail panel, or on other secondary locations of external marketing materials
  • A unit logo does not replace the need for a Mason logo on the front, on the cover, or on a primary location of the marketing material
  • The unit logo and the University logo should never be placed side-by-side
  • Unit logos are terminating logos—do not use a unit logo to create sub-unit logos

Unit logos are developed by Creative Services—do not recreate, edit, or reconfigure unit logos; for digital files (jpeg, tiff, png, or eps) of your unit logo, email your request to creative@gmu.edu

The Mason M is an optional graphic element that can be used as a design element. This graphic is not a substitute for the primary University logo. The Mason M must be placed along an edge and must bleed off the page. Refer to the full list of requirements for graphic elements for more guidelines and examples.

The Mason M may be:

  • Cropped
  • Screened over a background color or photo
  • Used in white, black, or any of the Mason primary or secondary colors
  • Used as a background

Using Official University Colors

Mason green and gold are a distinct part of our brand. They are a powerful differentiator that makes us stand out from other universities. The Mason brand includes 27 secondary colors that were derived from places and objects on campus, and the names of the colors reference their inspiration.

Notes about visual branding and color:

  • Use Mason green and gold as the primary colors in your layouts
  • Use secondary colors with Mason’s primary colors to express the University’s many facets
  • Do not use secondary colors alone or as the primary color in branded materials
  • Use secondary colors that are relevant to your target audience or message
  • Use secondary colors as accent colors or as subtle backgrounds behind typography and graphics
  • Screens or tints may be used
  • Use secondary Mason colors in conjunction with Mason green and gold
